In our first newsletter of the year, for January 2018, we welcome you to join us in the work for freedom and democracy in Egypt. We cover important current news and events, as well as ways you can get involved.

Highlights include:

Human Rights Watch: “We Do Unreasonable Things Here”
The latest report from Human Rights Watch on torture of pro-Democracy supporters in Egypt since General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi claimed power.

Carnegie Middle East Center: “Cutting Off Cairo”
The latest report from Michelle Dunne on addressing human rights violations though political influence and leveraging foreign aid funding.

Al Jazeera: “U.S. to withhold $290m in Egyptian aid over human rights”
A small step in the right direction, the U.S. Congress made a landmark cut in funding to Egypt over human rights violations, something human rights NGOs and activists have been petitioning for since the Military Coup stole away Egypt’s democracy in 2013.

What about the Magnitsky Act?
U.S. Senator John McCain has led dialogue on implementing sanctions against “individuals responsible for human rights abuses and high level corruption” based on the 2016 Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. Would that list of individuals happen to include General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt?

What happens next now that UN has reported on torture in Egypt?
During the United Nations 72nd General Assembly, the UN Committee Against Torture reported on torture in Egypt as a systemic practice.
